Gambell Street
Future vision for Gambell Street, located in the Fairview neighborhood of Anchorage, AK
The Fairview community is working to transform Gambell Street. What was once a thriving main street for the Fairview neighborhood, the city of Anchorage converted it into the highway couplet we have today.

Gambell as a future Main Street
We see Gamble as a vibrant Main Street that balances modal priorities to encourage more active transportation and invites people to spend time in Fairview. The future Gamble Street would encourage slower vehicle speeds, provide ample pedestrian space, and offer frequent safe crossing opportunities to achieve this vision. Some of the key design elements for Gamble St. include:
Gambell Street as a vibrant main street that prioritizes active modes and invites people to spend time in Fairview.
- Gambell Main Street with one lane in each direction
- Summer parking lanes on both sides that serve as snow storage in winter
- Shared use travel lanes with bicycles
- Marked crosswalks throughout corridor
- Lateral shift between 10th and 12th avenues at bottom of hill
Video of a Lego workshop from 2024 Anchorage Design Week. Led by local design expert Peter Briggs (Corvus Design) to guide folks to share and articulate ideas for how open space and the built environment can support the residents of Fairview and greater Anchorage.
The results of this creative symposium are intended to represent ideas describing greenway connections and economic development targets to advance the East Downtown and the Fairview neighborhood while focusing on a core area of the proposed highway connection project – Gambell Main Street .
